Q. Do we need Planning Permission?
A. PROBABLY! You may be advised you do not, only to find out that you have a problem when you try to move home.
Some planning authorities interpret planning law differently to others. For example a private footpath or bridleway is a highway in some areas but others deem a highway to be only those that are maintained by the Highways Authorities.
A site visit by our professionals will clarify this.

Q. Do we need Building Regulations?
A. PROBABLY NOT! If the conservatory is larger than 30 square metres - you will.
If you remove the window or door between the main house and the conservatory - you will.
If your wall area is more then the glazed area - you may.

Q. Do conservatories have to comply to British Standards?
A. No, surprisingly, because there is no British Standard for conservatories, only for components. This may change.

Q. Do the foundations have to be a certain depth?
A. No, surprisingly, so beware of companies that dig foundations that are too shallow. This will change if and when conservatories come under Building regulations.

Q. Do Allstyle build conservatories to exactly what I require?
A. Probably, because all Allstyle conservatories are made-to-measure.
We can build to many shapes because of this and because we are experts in building conservatories.

Q. What styles do you build?
A. Lean-to, Edwardian/Georgian, Victorian, P-Shape, L-Shape, Gabled, Lantern Roof and even your own bespoke shape (some have to be this way because of angled boundaries).

Q. Can I build a conservatory on a boundary?
A. Not really because no part of it should be over the boundary. That goes for guttering and foundations. The concrete foundations will be 100mm closer to the boundary than the brick wall above it.

Q. Is glass in the roof better than polycarbonate?
A. Sometimes... If your main criteria is for it to be quiet when it is raining then you will prefer glass.
Through glass you can see the sky during the day and the stars at night. The problem is that this means you will also see everything that lands on it. Also, neighbours will be able to see you and into your main home if the house doors are open. Unless you are not overlooked you will probably require roof blinds.
Polycarbonate on the other hand is more noisy when it rains but such is the variety of this material that you can eliminate glare from the sun and still have enough light transmission. It also means you will not require blinds to remain private. Some polycarbonates will reflect more of the sun's heat rays thereby the conservatory will remain less hot.
Polycarbonate is less expensive than glass so you should consider your most important requirements.
Nothing is perfect and you may find that your ideal is beyond your budget.

Q. Will my conservatory get too hot in the summer as I am southerly facing?
A. Yes, unless you do something about it.
With glass roofs you can specify some of the modern coatings that greatly reduce heat from the sun and can also reduce the glare.
This is also true of certain polycarbonates. This may prove expensive so a worthy consideration is to install an air conditioning unit. It may cost less than special glasses and you can also have a unit that produces heat during the winter.

Q. Could I live in a conservatory all year round?
A. Many people do. It all depends on the level of comfort you require. It is unrealistic to expect the same level of insulation in a conservatory as the lounge of your home. However, as long as you produce enough heat during cold days and evenings you certainly could use it all year round in the evenings.
If you have to pay more to heat it and you are lucky enough to have a southerly aspect you will gain 'free' heat from the sun during the daytime that will also heat your home.
The same is true of an air conditioning unit. If you feel the cost of installing and running it means all year round use then you will be inline with many other people.

Q. What type of heating could I use?
A. Extend your home radiator system; Electric convectors; Oil-filled radiators; Underfloor heating (electric or water). Several customers have even installed log burners. This isn't a silly as it sounds as they have been doing it in Sweden for years
